Stobietown Press is a small print studio focused on the craft of letterpress printing.

Letterpress is a traditional relief printing process where ink is rolled onto intricately arranged wooden and metal moveable type and then pressed into paper – hence the term letterpress.

Letterpress – and the technology to cast metal type – emerged in western Europe as a form of mass communication in the 1450s and continued as the dominant form of printing until the 1950s.

Our studio is filled with the antique printing equipment that was discarded from commercial print studios in the 1950s and 60s.

Our presses include an 1890s  9”x13” Cropper, Charlton & Co. platen and a  1952 FAG Standard 510 flatbed cylinder press.

We also have a large collection of wooden and metal  type, furniture, reglets and the myriad of tools required to compose type using traditional techniques.

Letterpress aesthetic has a practical simplicity. Design is limited to the typefaces and woodcuts on hand in the studio.

Letters are arranged into words and words into sentences. Even the spaces between the words are composed using perfectly engineered spaces known as ‘furniture’ ‘reglets’ and ‘leading’.

Letterpress is a traditional craft that produces beautifully simple printed goods. Please get in touch if you’re keen to know more.
